The son of a Tree-lifter, Joe was born on a forested, tuckaway island, just over a day’s walk from the sea.
For six years, he lived there with his father, safe in their small village, and far removed from the troubles of the Maincountry.
One night, however, Joe’s father shook him awake, explaining that he had to leave without delay – to a place across the water where they needed his help.
But he promised he would send for Joe one day, as soon as it was safe.
Fixing him in the eye, his father pressed a compass into the boy’s hand and then… was gone in the night.
For weeks and months Joe has waited…
Finally, his father has sent word for him to come.
